Lower Yellowstone Falls

Yet another photograph from Yellowstone. This day we drove north from the Lake Hotel, through some beautiful rolling hills and green scenery. We visited fumaroles, and saw a large deer grazing on grass (there must have been 20 people surrounding it, taking pictures as it ignored them and munched). There is a place in the park called the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone... meaning it's the big canyon inside of Yellowstone. (The canyon is actually rather tiny compared with the real Grand Canyon). But it is colorful and yellow and the water is an icy mountain blue-green. There are two falls, the lower and upper. The names lower and upper refer to their location along the flow, the upper being upstream, the lower being downstream. These are the lower falls. The day we drove here started out cold, wet and rainy. By the time we reached the canyon, the clouds had mostly dissipated and the sun was shining. A cool breeze was nice, though the sun was warm and if the breeze stopped it didn't take long to get hot. We were in Yellowstone early in the season; the first week in June. Many locations had just opened the week before from winter closures, so there were minimal tourists. That is, the roads weren't clogged and it wasn't hard to find parking. I really liked this spot and spent about an hour just poking around, enjoying the river from different angles. We visited the upper falls after this; they are smaller, but you can get a lot closer to them.
