We planned to stay at Jackson Lake Lodge in the Grand Teton National Park.
The park is named after a range of mountains that look rather saw tooth and impressive. The area is mostly wilderness, and there is lots of wildlife like deer, bison, bear and moose. The mountains are rugged and form the western edge of Jackson Hole, the name of the valley just south of Yellowstone.
While driving around the valley, we decided to go visit the other lodge in the area, Jenny Lake Lodge. We had originally rejected it because it was really expensive ($650 a night). When we got there, we fell in love with the place. It had small cabins, each beautifully furnished, in a quiet isolated setting. The main building had a high end restaurant which served a gourmet dinner (included in the room price because there was no other restaurant nearby).
Horseback rides were also thrown in to the price of a room. We asked if we could switch reservations from Jackson Lake (they were owned by the same company) and were told, yes. So there we were.
The evening we went to dinner and were lucky enough to get a window seat. The sun was setting on the mountains and it was the most beautiful site. While we were waiting for our squash soup I pulled out my camera and took pictures of the sunset. It was gorgeous, as you can see.
Returning to our cabin after dinner was fun, as it was pitch black and there were bears in the area. Fortunately, the room came with two flashlights and a recommendation to bring them with you to dinner. We used them successfully and were not mauled.
The next day, we saw a cluster of cars by the road a few miles away and stopped to see what everyone was looking at. It was a moose, hidden in the trees.
