Amargosa Opera House

The drive to Death Valley is about as long as the drive to Las Vegas, except for the second half you aren't on freeway and it can get pretty desolate.

Death Valley Junction is really not a town, just a name. There is a small hotel, a tourist shop with a cafe, and the Amargosa Opera House. The opera house was run for many years by Marta Becket who would put on a show most nights. While the theater is small and far away from just about everything, it was odd enough that people came. It survived for many, many years and has become rather legendary. I live for this kind of opportunity. Distant, out of the way places where there is interesting architecture, an abandoned building, an obscure story. For this reason I love this photograph. It isn't much, but it is, as I say, what I live for.
