Cowboy

There is a small town in southern California called Julian. It is a "mountain" town though it isn't all that high up (4,000 ft, just high enough to get some pine trees). One weekend, in an attempt to get away and just leave the worries of life and work, we went to a small hotel in the town for just one night. It was Easter weekend. The hotel turned out to be amazingly marvelous, each room decorated differently, up on a hill with a view of the town in the valley, breakfast included, just a great little getaway place. There isn't much in the town. Mostly, it is just quaint. Its main street has an old western town sort of feel. It is filled with small tourist gift shops, antiques places, and mini-restaurants. The area is traditionally known for its apples, and so apple pies abound. Every place sells great pies. Get a hot dog for lunch? Comes with a slice a pie. As we strolled down the main street a small alley caught my eye. A gift shop in an old brick building had a side entrance in the alley, and next to the door was a sign cut in the silhouette of a cowboy leaning up against the wall. The sign said something about "come on in!" or "enter around back" or something like that. It was in shadow. So, I took a photo. Then I edited the heck out of it. Black and white, and upped the contrast. The sign turned into a complete silhouette, and here is the result. That day was great, primarily because the town was just so different from home. It was hard to think about the pressures of work or the laundry that needed to be done when meandering through alleys like this thinking about apple pie.
